Not all of my computer memory is showing?
I don’t know why this is, but not all of my installed memory is registering.
I’ve had my computer for a couple of years and I have 2GB of DDR-2, I’m running on Vista-32 and have shared graphics.
In my system information it only says I have 894MB and my Experience Index score on RAM has dropped from 5.9 to 3.9. What has happened to my memory?
Is it a good idea for my to open my case and check the memory module is firmly in?
it sounds like one module has stopped working, yes you need to check to see if the modules are in place and do this with the PC off or you risk a short circuit which could damage both the module and the mainboard.
If you have 2x 1Gb installed remove both and re-seat them in the slots, check there is no dust before you put them back. Boot to the BIOS and it should show you what memory modules you have installed in what slots, if it says 2x 1Gb then all is well, if only one is listed check to see in which slot, shutdown, remove the one that is shown as working, put the other one in the slot you just removed the good one from, do the same again. If it shows nothing on screen or you just get a series of beeps then the module is defective. If it boots then shutdown, replace the other module and boot to BIOS again, if you see 2Gb as a total all is well, but if you still see just one and it is in the same slot as all times before the defect is on the mainboard. If you have just 2 memory slots then change the board, if you have 3 or 4 try the module in slot 3 or 4 and it should work but you should consider changing the board or the other slots may also fail shortly.
It is a bit odd the difference between what is probably a 1Gb module and what you have available is 130Mb, I would have perhaps expected 128Mb.
If you have a single 2Gb module then it is possible the BIOS settings are a bit messed up but I would suggest the module is damaged if it is a single 2Gb. Again change memory slots to rule out a mainboard issue, if you get the full 2Gb (2024Mb minus the shared VGA) then the board is damaged,as above consider changing it (or return under warranty if applicable)
